Ottawa Police say a 12-year-old girl brought methamphetamine to school last week and gave it to another student an incident that led police to arrest three adults after serving a search warrant at an Ottawa home.

Surprising? Not really, said Capt. Randy Allan of the Ottawa Police Department.

“I’m sure it jumps out more at the public than it does at us. The public doesn’t have any idea how widespread drug usage is,” he said. “The officers are in these homes serving search warrants, and they see the way these kids are brought up.”

The incident happened Thursday, when a student at Ottawa Middle School became sick to her stomach at school, Allan said. According to the Ottawa Herald, officers eventually learned the girl had been given methamphetamine by another student, a 12-year-old Ottawa girl, who was arrested and taken into juvenile custody.

Allan said the girl had a “sizable quantity” of meth, though he did not know the exact amount.

Officers began investigating and eventually served a search warrant that led to the arrest of two Ottawa residents and a Eudora man. Allan said he couldn’t comment on the relationship between the adults and the girl because it would identify the girl.

Allan said he planned to meet with school officials to talk about the incident and what could be done if it happens again.

“The school is certainly aware that this could happen again and doing everything it can to avoid it,” he said.

Ottawa Supt. Jan Collins could not be reached for comment Monday.
