Homicide latest tragedy for family

? Natasha Crump came from a family seemingly haunted by violence.

Police discovered the 20-year-old’s body in an Olathe apartment Dec. 23 and have charged the father of her 20-month-old daughter with her murder.

She’s the latest in a sad history for her family, beginning with one of her uncles, Danny Crump, who was sentenced to life in prison in 1980 after mailing his ex-wife a gift-wrapped bomb, which exploded, killing her and five of her family members.

Natasha’s maternal grandfather, Daniel Crump, was robbed and strangled by his neighbor in 1997.

“It just seems like they’re losing their family one piece at a time,” said Crump’s aunt, Debra Kerns.

Jose Benjamin Solis, 23, appeared in Johnson County District Court on Thursday on charges of first-degree murder and rape in Crump’s death. He was being held on $500,000 bond, and Judge Nancy Orrick ordered Solis not to contact any witnesses, including members of Crump’s family.

Kerns said Crump and Solis had shared the apartment for some time but Crump was moving out.

“She tried to start over again by moving to Ottawa and getting her own place,” Kerns said.

Crump was staying with Solis after her car broke down, giving Solis time with his daughter, Alizaia, while Crump waited for the car to get fixed. The child is now living with Crump’s mother in Paola.

“She was a really good mom,” said Alaina Meadows, who worked with Crump at the Mustache Cup restaurant in Olathe. “She was really focused on her kid.”

Friends and family said Crump and Solis’ relationship was rocky. Solis pleaded no contest in April to misdemeanor domestic battery against Crump and was sentenced to probation.

Kerns said Crump met Solis about two years ago in Hutchinson while attending Job Corps.

She said Solis was “possessive and controlling” toward her niece.

Rich Kauffman, owner of the Mustache Cup, had banned Solis from the restaurant following arguments between him and Crump.

Kauffman said he sensed something was wrong when she didn’t show up for her 5:30 a.m. shift Dec. 23.
