Fast start lifts A&M

? Josh Carter tied a school record with eight three-pointers, and No. 11 Texas A&M scored the first 28 points in a 101-27 win over Grambling State on Thursday.

Carter also tied a Big 12 Conference record with seven threes in the first half, and Joseph Jones finished with 20 points for the Aggies (11-2), who set a school record for most points in a first half while taking a 65-13 lead at the break.

Kendric Baker made a three-pointer with 11:41 left in the first half to stop Texas A&M’s 28-0 run to open the game.

The Aggies shot 64 percent in the first half and limited Grambling (2-5) to 21 percent shooting in the half and 19 percent for the game. The 27 points were the fewest allowed by Texas A&M since the Aggies defeated TCU 48-22 in 1948.

Carter, Jones and Donald Sloan combined to make three straight three-pointers to make it 84-21 with 11:30 left before coach Billy Gillispie took his starters out for good.

Baylor 91, N. Carolina A&T 71

Waco, Texas – Henry Dugat scored 19 points, including four of seven three-pointers, to lead Baylor. Kevin Rogers added 18 for the Bears (8-3), while Aaron Bruce scored 14 and Tim Bush 12.

Steven Rush’s three-pointer pulled the Aggies (3-9) to within 10 points at 57-47 with just under 14 minutes remaining. But Baylor put together a 14-4 run and led 71-51 with 10:53 left. Bush and Tweety Carter each scored six points during the run.

Oklahoma 69, SMU 42

Norman, Okla. – Junior center Longar Longar had 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to lead Oklahoma. Oklahoma (8-3) has won four straight games and held six opponents to 48 points or less. Entering the game, the Sooners had held their opponents to an average of 54.9 points a game.

The Sooners snapped SMU’s seven-game winning streak, the Mustangs’ longest since the 1999-2000 season. SMU (9-2) failed in its first attempt to give coach Matt Doherty his 100th career win. Doherty previously coached at North Carolina and Florida Atlantic.

Texas 76, Centenary 66

Austin, Texas – Kevin Durant scored 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Texas. Texas (9-3) led by 21 early in the second half, only to watch the Gents (5-8) cut the deficit in half.

Baylor 89, N.C. A&T 40

Waco, Texas – Latara Darrett and Latoya Wyatt each scored 13 points to lead Baylor over North Carolina A&T.
