Fleeing theft suspects back into police officer

Two people suspected of burglary struck a police officer with a car early Saturday while trying to flee from an apartment complex near Kansas University.

Lawrence police responded around 2:30 a.m. Saturday to a neighbor’s tip that someone was breaking into an apartment in the 1000 block of Mississippi Street.

When they arrived, officers discovered that three apartments had been burglarized.

One of the officers then found four suspects and chased them to a nearby parking lot, where one suspect climbed into a car. The other suspects apparently ran away.

As the car was backing up, it clipped an officer who was behind the car attempting to reach the suspect. The officer suffered minor injuries, police said.

The suspects in the car, a 22-year-old Topeka man and an 18-year-old Lawrence woman who allegedly was driving, were found driving a few blocks away by KU police and arrested.

Police continue to search for the other suspects.
