Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 24, 1906: “The community is poised to celebrate one of its finest Christmases and many will be attending special church services in connection with the celebration. : “Rock chalk, jayhawk, hallelujah/Rock chalk, jay hawk, hallelujah/Glory, glory hallelujah.” The strains of this unique chorus mingled with drumbeats and occasional discordant notes from a horn were heard near Eleventh and Main streets yesterday afternoon. Some thought they were cheering for some kind of football or basketball game but an investigation showed eight members of the Salvation Army entertaining a shivering crowd with a “college yell” hymn set to the pep tune.”
