Colorful yard decorations strewn throughout Lawrence

Around Thanksgiving each year, Jason and Jodi Pendleton add a little bit more to their front yard of holiday decorations.

They mostly do it at the pleasure of their sons, 5-year-old Nathan and 1-year-old Nicholas.

This year, their front yard and house at 3929 Monterey Place includes candy cane poles to hold up lights along the driveway and sidewalk. They have lights galore around the pathway, front yard and in the shape of a Christmas tree above the garage.

Jason Pendleton, a Free State High School teacher and soccer coach, said this year’s holiday display took about 14 hours to complete and was a family project.

“As the kids got older, it became a bigger deal to make it a bigger deal to them,” he said.

The Pendletons said the decorations help put them in a festive holiday spirit right after Thanksgiving and they hope that the spirit spreads into the community.

“Obviously, we do a lot of it for ourselves. We also feel like by decorating we are helping other people experience the season as well,” he said. “With all of the lights, it’s kind of the Clark Griswold effect,” referring to a character in the movie “Christmas Vacation.”

One of the family’s favorite activities is to drive around Lawrence to look at lights, particularly on Christmas Eve.

To help the Pendletons and other area residents, here’s a list of addresses that have creative holiday displays. These were provided by our readers:
