CASA plans training for volunteers

Douglas County Court Appointed Special Advocates is offering training classes for new volunteers. CASA volunteers are trained to advocate for children who have been abused or neglected and are under protection of the juvenile court.

Training will begin Feb. 1 and end Feb. 13. Classes will meet Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Volunteers must be 21 or older, have an interest in children and have good social skills, good writing skills and the ability to be objective. They also must submit to background checks and commit to a minimum of a year of service.

Immediate volunteer needs

¢ The Lied Center of Kansas seeks volunteers to usher at events. Usher duties include greeting patrons, handing out programs, tearing tickets and assisting patrons with seating. For more information, e-mail liedushers@ku.edu.

¢ Douglas County Dental Clinic seeks volunteer “tooth fairies.” Tooth fairy volunteers will read stories to children about good oral hygiene, distribute oral hygiene supplies and materials, and teach children the correct way to brush and care for their teeth.

Volunteers must interact well with children, provide their own costumes and enjoy dressing the part of the tooth fairy. The dental clinic will provide all other materials and training.

¢ Community Living Opportunities seeks a volunteer to serve as a human resources office assistant. Duties include helping with filing and other paperwork or organizational projects. This ongoing volunteer position requires 10 or more hours of service each week during normal business hours. This is an excellent position for people who enjoy traditional office-related duties.
