Kansas University announced the hiring of Pepper Rodgers, currently a UCLA assistant, as its new head football coach. He was a former star Georgia Tech quarterback and would replace Jack Mitchell, who had been fired by Athletic Director Wade Stinson after a nine-year tenure here. Meanwhile, Kansas State University announced the hiring of Vince Gibson, a Tennessee assistant, to replace Doug Weaver.
Weston, Ill., was picked as the site for a $375 million atom-smasher project that the Lawrence area had tried hard to claim. Closing out a competition that had involved dozens of communities such as Lawrence seeking the gigantic enterprise, the Atomic Energy announced the choice of Weston.
The City Commission gave its OK to a 35-cent monthly service charge for sanitation pickup for Lawrence residents in single-family and duplex dwellings. The rate was to go up in most instances from $1.40 to $1.75 a month.
