Lawrence charities and organizations are still making up their holiday wish lists as they get ready to fulfill their clients’ needs.

On those lists are items ranging from toiletries to toys and gift cards to Christmas Day meals.

People interested in making a donation or volunteering time can call the Roger Hill Volunteer Center, 2518 Ridge Court, at (785) 865-5030.

Toys for Tots is still calling for more toy and cash donations at both Lawrence Hy-Vees until Dec. 24.

“Right now we don’t have enough toys to serve the children we served last year. And I don’t look for us to serve less children,” said Mary Jones, coordinator for Douglas County Toys for Tots, which is having the toy drive from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dole Center.

Adopt-a-Family programs are still in need of adopters.

“There are a lot more families this year that have filled in applications,” said Paul Hunt, human services director at the Ballard Community Center, 708 Elm, where about 60 families still need adopting. “We’ve got lots of families with teenagers. We’ve got a couple sets with disabilities.”

East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corporation, or ECKAN, 841-3357, still has six families and picked up an additional 25 children from an agency that deals specifically with children. It will be accepting donors until Friday, said Jeanette Collier, coordinator of Douglas County ECKAN Center.

Grocery gift cards and cash donations are needed for late applications for the Adopt-a-Family program through Douglas County Senior Services, said Janet Ikenberry, community services manager.

Those at the Lawrence Community Shelter need batteries, blankets, deodorant, shaving cream, razors, shampoo, laundry detergent and sleeping bags.

Women’s Transitional Care Services, a Lawrence shelter for abused women, needs women’s toiletries, especially lotion, conditioner and ethnic hair care products, as well as large-size diapers and pull-ups.

WTCS also can use calendars and day-planners for the new year and cell phones with chargers to be used for 911 calls.

“We can always use some things around here,” said Eva Vlach, volunteer program director at WTCS.

Food donations

Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen, or LINK, 221 W. 10th St., is in need of food items such as coffee, sugar, canned soups, butter and salad dressings, which can be dropped off from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. It is closed on Christmas.

“It would be fantastic to get any of that stuff,” said Diane Morgan, assistant to the director at the Lawrence Community Shelter and the LINK coordinator. “We never have enough of it.”

The 13th annual Lawrence Community Christmas Dinner is asking for 35 5-pound frozen hams and 40 12-pound frozen turkeys. Donators and volunteers to prepare and deliver meals should contact Kent Ely at 760-2943 between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekdays until Friday to arrange a drop-off at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.
