The death of a 40-year-old Olathe woman found April 30 in a burned-out car near Rock Creek Boat Ramp at Clinton Lake officially has been ruled a suicide.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office made that notification Thursday to Carolyn A. Bower’s family, following the completion of an autopsy report. Coroner Erik Mitchell previously had said there were no indications of a second person involved and that it would be unlikely if her death were ruled foul play.

Bower’s body was burned so badly that the autopsy wasn’t able to say exactly how she died. There were traces of the anti-depressant citalopram and the painkiller hydrocodone in her body, but the “degree of toxicity could not be assessed” because of the fire.

The findings in the coroner’s report, combined with a sheriff’s investigation that involved speaking with friends and family members, led it to be ruled a suicide. But the sheriff’s department is not elaborating on the witnesses’ statements or other evidence.
