Volunteers wanted for special-needs children’s group

The Visions for Tomorrow class needs volunteers to assist with children’s programming. The children’s group may include children with a variety of special needs, including ADD/ADHD, autism, Tourette syndrome, and depressive, eating or anxiety disorders.

Volunteers with interest or experience working with children with special needs and students in related areas of study are welcome. Volunteers must be willing to assist from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a series of eight Thursday sessions this fall.

¢ Operation WildLife provides care and refuge to displaced and injured animals. The organization has openings in the fall for volunteers who can work daytime hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays. ¢ Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County is looking for volunteers who want to make a difference in the life of a child. Volunteers spend from 30 minutes to four hours once a week with a child, depending on the program in which they are enrolled. This opportunity is available to individuals, couples and families. Volunteers need to be at least 16 years old, pass background checks, go through a screening interview and be willing to commit to the program for a minimum of one year. ¢ Headquarters Counseling Center needs volunteers to distribute fliers for its upcoming fall training program. The center will start information meetings for the training program from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Community Mercantile, 901 Iowa. ¢ Lawrence Community Theatre is in need of a volunteer to commit two to three hours per week to help maintain the costume shop. Duties include keeping costume materials organized and logging new donations. For more information, contact Jane Pennington at the theater, 843-7469.

Also, the front office at the theater is looking for volunteers to answer phones, take ticket reservations and do light clerical work. Some computer experience is preferred. ¢ The Kids Voting Coalition seeks the assistance of community volunteers to offer students in kindergarten though 12th grade an authentic voting experience on Nov. 7. Individual volunteers, as well as civic or business groups, are needed to help at Kids Voting tables before and after school at polling sites throughout Douglas County, including rural voting locations. Shifts last approximately two hours and may be scheduled at a convenient voting location.
