Medinah, Ill. ? The Kinks would have loved Ian Poulter. He’s golf’s “Dedicated Follower of Fashion.”

The stylish Englishman is getting more reviews on his golf than his wardrobe at the 88th PGA Championship. Poulter shot his second round of 2-under-par 70 at Medinah on Friday and will have the weekend to show off his clothes.

“If I shoot the scores, nobody is talking about it,” Poulter said. “That’s frustrating. It truly detracts from the real fact of me playing good golf. I am playing well.

“I actually care what I look like on the golf course, unlike most of the other guys who pull out a T-shirt and a pair of trousers and look (scruffy). I don’t want to do that. Honestly, I’m happy with what I’m wearing. If people like it and I get some attention, it’s fine with me.”

For the record, Poulter’s Friday outfit was a bit subdued, compared with some of the things he has worn on the golf course. He wore a lime green shirt and a matching visor with black trousers that featured lime green trim and a few green sequins.

“I tried today,” he said. “Everything is matching, unlike other people who can’t match the colors of their clothes, not naming any names. I don’t need to always come out in outrageous things. Once or twice a year is enough.”

Ryder review

The Arnold Palmer-designed K-Club that will play host to the Ryder Cup next month has been getting C-minus reviews. The course, just west of Dublin, is a parkland course like thousands of layouts in the United States. It probably doesn’t measure up to the great seaside courses such as Portmarnock, Lahinch, Doonbeg and others, but U.S. Ryder Cup captain Tom Lehman likes the layout.

“It isn’t Royal County Down or Portmarnock,” Lehman said. “That’s the only thing about it – it’s not a links course. If it’s not a links course, (maybe) it can’t be considered true Irish golf. But it’s it’s very, very good. It has great grounds, a great hotel and a great atmosphere.”

Long Swede

Co-leader Henrik Stenson won’t be listed among the driving distance leaders this week only because he has used his driver sparingly. Stenson has the ability to move it a long ways. Playing in China last year, he blasted one more than 400 yards.

“That was a pretty good one,” Stenson said. “It was definitely one of the longest ones I’ve ever hit. I cut it over a dogleg. It was a missile. I don’t know how long it was.”

Stenson will marry girlfriend and three-time Swedish ladies champion Emma Lofgren in December.

Local knowledge

Jeff Sluman will be watching the final two rounds at home in Hinsdale, Ill., after shooting 74-73 while houseguests Davis Love III (68-69) and Chris DiMarco (71-70) will be playing. Sluman respects Medinah, but he wasn’t surprised by the low scores in the first two rounds.

“There are some great players out here and I’m not saying they’re tearing it up, but they are certainly playing well,” Sluman said.
