Kansas University Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Richard Lariviere has been elected to the Council on Foreign Relations, a nongovernmental, nonpartisan think tank on foreign affairs.

Lariviere speaks both Hindi and French and can read several other languages, including German and Sanskrit.

He is the third KU member on the council. KU’s Rice Distinguished Professor of Law, Raj Bhala, and his wife, KU philosophy graduate student Kara Tan Bhala, are also members.

Other members of the council include former secretaries of state Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright, former U.S. ambassadors to the United Nations Jeane Kirkpatrick and Thomas Pickering. The council has about 4,200 life members.
