Lutherans to discuss education statement

Lutherans from Kansas and Missouri are invited to gather in Lawrence to discuss a proposed social statement about education.

The hearing will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.

The statement, “Our Calling in Education,” has been in the works since 2003. It will serve as an official social policy document for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

Kevin Boatright, the Trinity Lutheran member who is serving as convener of the hearing, said one key point will be discussion of the Lutheran church’s participation in higher education ministries.

The hearing is one of 50 across the country this summer and one of three in the Central States Synod, which encompasses Kansas and Missouri.

Women’s ministry changes names

A local program designed to help women develop their faith has changed names.

Martha and Mary’s Way announced last weekend it now will be called Womanspirit Connection.

The change, made after several months of discussions, was made to make the name more in line with the interfaith focus of the group.

“During the process, we decided that Womanspirit Connection summed up our group’s mission in just three words: Bringing women together on their spiritual journeys,” according to a statement on the group’s Web site.

Prison outreach advocate to visit

Bo Lozoff, a writer, musician and activist named one of the United States’ top 100 spiritual visionaries by the Utne Reader, will participate in two events this weekend in Lawrence.

Lozoff will give a public talk at 7 p.m. today and will give a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday. Both events are at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

Lozoff is the founder of the Human Kindness Foundation, known primarily for its prison outreach work. His most recent book is “It’s a Meaningful Life: It Just Takes Practice.”
