Ex-prisoner arrested for sex crime in Texas

Former Lawrence man released from Kansas prison 7 months ago

Seven months after being released on parole from a Kansas prison, a former Lawrence man convicted of raping a woman at knifepoint in the mid-1980s has been arrested in Texas for a new sex crime.

Fort Worth police on Sunday arrested 44-year-old Devin T. Galloway for the Aug. 5 robbery and sexual assault of a woman at a dry-cleaning business, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Wednesday.

The 20-year-old woman told police that a man came into the store, pulled a gun, demanded money and forced her into an office, where he tied her up and sexually assaulted her.

In March 1984, a Lawrence woman told police she was in her apartment when a man knocked on the door saying he wanted to use her telephone, according to Douglas County court records. He used the phone and left but came back a few moments later – this time having changed into a hospital gown – and asked to use the phone again.

The woman told police the man pulled a knife, tied her up, raped her and choked her until she blacked out. The woman told police she pleaded with him not to kill her, and offered him a $400 check and drove him to her bank to cash it.

Galloway was convicted of rape and kidnapping in that case. He was paroled Jan. 17, 2006, in Texas, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. On Aug. 14, Kansas classified him as a parole absconder.
