Manhattan ? Tyler Hughes, a reserve basketball player at Kansas State University, was dismissed from the team Monday after it became known that his name appears in a registered sex-offender database.

“After thoroughly investigating the facts as we know them, we feel it is in Tyler’s best interest, as well as the university’s, that we sever our relationship,” Tim Weiser, Kansas State athletic director, said in a press release.

The decision came after Weiser learned over the weekend that Hughes was listed in the Kansas Bureau of Investigation registered sex-offender database.

The 21-year-old player was registered May 5 for aggravated indecent liberties with a child. District Attorney Paul Morrison said Hughes was under 18 at the time, but authorities did not find out about it until recently.

“It is not uncommon at all to have a delay in cases like this,” Morrison said.

Weiser said he would not comment further on the matter “because the dismissal resulted from an apparent juvenile criminal case that is sealed by law and preceded his arrival at Kansas State.”

Hughes, 6-foot-11, 240 pounds, played in 26 games last season, averaging 1.7 points.

“It is absolutely not what it seems,” Hughes’ father, Rodney, told The Kansas City Star. “But no matter right or wrong, it still doesn’t look good.”
