UTEP passes on Jankovich, taps Barbee

University of Memphis assistant basketball coach Tony Barbee will today be named Doc Sadler’s replacement as head coach at UTEP.

Barbee emerged the choice of UTEP athletic director Bob Stull over a batch of candidates, including Kansas University assistant Tim Jankovich, who interviewed with Stull on Friday in Dallas.

“Tim did meet with UTEP officials,” KU head coach Bill Self said Sunday. “We talked throughout the process how excited he was about the fit here at Kansas and the opportunity to work with this particular team. It was a positive experience for Tim. He’s so excited about the season; he felt it was a win-win (whether he got the job or had the chance to stay here at KU).”

ESPN.com’s Andy Katz said Barbee was chosen over Jankovich, UTEP assistants Tony Benford and Randall Dickey, Texas A&M assistant Alvin Brooks, Sam Houston State head coach Bob Marlin and LSU assistant Butch Pierre.
