Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 9, 1906: “The Central Protective Assn. will hold its sixth annual picnic at Durr’s Grove, Eudora, Aug. 15. It will be attended by many state and local dignitaries and is a major event. : The first annual meeting of the Kansas Automobile Club will be in Topeka on Labor Day. : Lawrence has a good climate due to the absence of joints and jointists. Undoubtedly, Lawrence is one of the cleanest cities in Kansas because laws here are enforced to a far higher degree than they are in surrounding regions, particularly Kansas City. : Among the letters received by Kansas University from prospective students are scores from Missourians who prefer the Kansas institution to the one in their home state. Besides the superior educational facilities the better sanitation of Lawrence is of widespread influence in bringing students here. : Kansas banks are prosperous and there is a bank for every 1,850 people in the state, beating Scotland’s record for a bank for every 2,500 citizens.”
