Drive to liquor store ends with 2 at hospitals

A trip to a North Lawrence liquor store Tuesday night caused a collision that sent one Lawrence man to a Kansas City-area hospital with injuries.

Around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, two Lawrence men were in a compact Toyota headed south on North Third Street that attempted to make a left turn into a liquor store parking lot. The Toyota was hit broadside by a northbound minivan, Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said.

The minivan was driven by Linwood resident Michael Scott, 54.

Hadl said the passenger in the Toyota, Richard Kahle, 59, was taken to University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., by air ambulance. Hadl said Kahle’s injuries later were deemed nonlife-threatening.

The Toyota’s driver, Thomas Randal, 40, Lawrence, was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with less severe injuries.

No one in the minivan was hurt, Hadl said.

Police are investigating Randal for suspected drunken driving and failure to yield.
