‘Sustainability’ efforts to be evaluated

Lawrence’s sustainability will be evaluated later this month, when consultants from the American Institute of Architects visit on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1.

The AIA gave Lawrence a grant earlier this year to evaluate the city’s ability to meet present needs but still leave resources in place for future generations. Consultants will evaluate Lawrence’s environmental, ecological and social sustainability.

“It’s more than just being environmentally friendly,” City Commissioner Boog Highberger said. “It’s about making decisions that make communities work in the long run.”

During the visit, city leaders will try to expose the consultants to as much of Lawrence and its residents as they can. Consultants will return for a three-day visit and follow up at later dates.
