Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for Aug. 4, 1906: “More than 50 friends attended the 80th birthday party of N.P. Deming and surprisingly there were seven men there age 80 or beyond. It was quite an occasion, provided by the daughter. : Sen. Harris paid $2,100 for 100 feet at the corner of Indiana and Henry streets. Just three short blocks to the west, situated on the same corner, are 100 feet that will be sold for $1,350. : State auditor Seth G.W. Wells notified county clerk Kerns today that Douglas County will be asked to pay $25,463 to the state treasury as the local share of the state taxes. The amount called for last year was $31,608. : The state superintendent of schools is calling for a number of teachers to fill spot around the state for the coming year. Salaries of $65 and $70 a month are being offered to those who take jobs in the smaller communities which have trouble getting enough people. Fortunately, Douglas County has no such problem.”
