Lawyer attends 43rd conference

Glee Smith, a member of the Lawrence law firm Barber Emerson LC, was among 250 lawyers, judges, law professors, legislators and other state officials – all lawyers – participating in the annual meeting of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws in Hilton Head, S.C.

Smith has been a Kansas Uniform Law Commissioner since 1963, and has attended every annual meeting for the past 43 years. He also has attended many drafting committee meetings between the annual conferences.

Smith served in the Kansas Senate from 1957 to 1973, and was Senate president from 1965 to 1973.

The conference, now in its 115th year, is comprised of more than 300 commissioners appointed by every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to draft and promote enactment of uniform laws that are designed to solve problems common to all states. Commissioners donate their time as a pro bono public service.

Eight acts just approved in South Carolina, and now available for state enactment, deal with issues ranging from new rules on volunteer health care services in declared emergencies, to a revision of established rules governing organ donations.
