Food, arts and crafts abound at the fair

Looking for something cool to do on a hot day? You might check out the foods, arts and crafts entries in air-conditioned comfort today at the Douglas County 4-H Fair.

Area 4-H’ers have been “baking up a storm,” getting hundreds of food items ready for the Douglas County Fair, said Margaret Kalb, executive director of the Douglas County Fair Board.

On Monday, the young chefs were having their pies, cakes, breads and other goods judged. Categories included nonperishable food items, cooking for fun, educational exhibit, place settings and extreme makeover.

Also, dozens of 4-H aspiring artists brought in a wide assortment of drawings, paintings and arts and crafts projects.

The fair had about 725 entries in the foods areas and about 680 entries in the arts and crafts categories, Kalb said.

She said the arts and food items will be on display through Sunday morning in Building 21 at the fairgrounds, 21st and Harper streets.
