Fort Riley ? Charges have been referred against two Fort Riley infantry soldiers for the training death of a fellow soldier.

Maj. Gen. Dennis Hardy, commanding general of Fort Riley, forwarded the charges Monday against Staff Sgt. Jeremy L. Muntz and Spc. James K. Tillery for the Jan. 25 shooting death of Pfc. Donald E. Compton, 20. It occurred as members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry were conducting training exercises on the post.

Tillery’s charges were referred to a general court-martial for dereliction of duty, involuntary manslaughter and negligent discharge of a firearm. No trial date was set.

Muntz faces one charge of dereliction of duty on several occasions concerning acts on the day of the shooting. His bad-conduct discharge trial was set for June 5 at Fort Riley.

Compton was shot while the soldiers were on one of Fort Riley’s ranges. He was taken to Irwin Community Hospital at Fort Riley by ambulance and pronounced dead at the hospital. He arrived at Fort Riley in March 2005 as an infantryman.
