Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World for April 10, 1906: “After breaking forth with new fury last night, the eruption of Vesuvius in Italy has again diminished this morning. So far there have been at least 500 corpses, the victims mostly old people, many covered by heavy layers of ash. : There has been no inquest set regarding the death of Tom Myers, who killed himself yesterday. Officials say an investigation is unnecessary since he poisoned himself while despondent over his family situation. : Two years ago there were six or eight candidates for sheriff. Now there is only one since J.R. Woodward has acquitted himself so well in office that he has no opposition. : Frank Gaines is asking for renomination for county treasurer. He is one of the youngest treasurers in Kansas but deserves to be returned to office because of good performance. : The Agriculture Department in Washington reports that the condition of the Kansas winter wheat crop is at 89.1 percent, 5 percent above the average.”
