Tigers off to rare 5-0 start

? Chris Shelton tripled twice and drove in three runs, rookie Justin Verlander pitched seven innings for his first career win, and the Detroit Tigers remained the American League’s only unbeaten team with a 7-0 victory Saturday night over the Texas Rangers.

Shelton hit five home runs in his first four games this season. But he didn’t need one to help Detroit get off to its first 5-0 start since 1985.

The first baseman hit a two-run triple in the first to give the Tigers a 4-0 cushion. Shelton, who is hitting .700 after going 3-for-4, added an RBI triple in the third. Curtis Granderson had a two-run homer in the seventh for Detroit.

Angels 3, Yankees 2

Anaheim, Calif. – Ervin Santana allowed one run over 52â3 innings, and Adam Kennedy hit a tiebreaking two-run triple to help Los Angeles hand Randy Johnson his first loss of the season.

Athletics 3, Mariners 0

Seattle – Barry Zito rebounded from his poor opening-day start, combining with three relievers on a one-hitter. Mark Kotsay gave the Athletics all the offense they needed with a home run, a triple and two runs scored.

Indians 3, Twins 0

Cleveland – Jason Johnson pitched shutout ball for seven innings in his Cleveland debut, and Travis Hafner homered again to lead Cleveland. Hafner went 3-for-3.

Red Sox 2, Orioles 1

Baltimore – Curt Schilling pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, Jason Varitek had a hand in both Boston runs, and the Red Sox beat Baltimore. Varitek hit two doubles, scored a run and drove in one.

Blue Jays 8, Devil Rays 4

Toronto – Gregg Zaun hit a go-ahead homer, and Toronto rallied from a four-run deficit. Zaun gave Toronto a 5-4 lead with a two-run homer off Jason Childers (0-1) in the fifth. Brian Tallet (1-0) pitched 22â3 innings.
