? An early morning wreck in Jefferson County on Saturday killed one man and sent another to a hospital with serious injuries.

The wreck occurred at 1 a.m. Saturday when a 1996 Chevrolet pickup driving along 74th Street just east of Meriden lost control, flew into the air and struck a 1999 Ford truck as the driver, William Stevens, backed the car out of his driveway, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol report.

The two men in the Chevrolet, Daniel Bailey and Chad Miltz, both from Topeka, flew out of the pickup during the wreck. Miltz, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither man had his seat belt on.

Emergency responders took Bailey, 23, to Stormont-Vail HealthCare in Topeka with disabling injuries, the report said. Bailey was later released from the hospital.

According to the report, Stevens refused medical treatment at the scene.
