Striking transit workers vote on contract offer

? Hundreds of bus drivers, train operators and mechanics voted Friday on a new contract offer as the city’s transit strike left tens of thousands of commuters without their usual transportation for a fifth day.

Union leaders discussed details of the offer with members before voting began but withheld terms from the public until the vote was completed.

Union spokesman Dave Minshall described the mood among workers as businesslike. “I think a lot of the emotion is gone,” he said.

If the contract is approved, the strike will end in time for Monday morning’s commute, according to union and transit agency officials.

The Regional Transportation District has operated about 45 percent of its bus service during the walkout, but hundreds of commuters have been forced to find other transportation.

Nearly 1,750 members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1001 walked off the job early Monday after rejecting the latest contract offer, triggering the first transit strike in metropolitan Denver in 24 years.
