Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for April 8, 1906: “An ordinance to pave Oread Avenue from Hancock to Lee streets and Hancock Street from Louisiana to Indiana passed the city council last night. Residents will pay for the grade and the clerk has been instructed to take bids for the work. :

“The first public exhibition of gymnasium work at the YMCA building last night was far above the expectations of the spectators. Director Ockerblad has taught the boys many drills and daring feats which were gone through last night without a mishap. :

“The third annual music festival tonight is due to be a highlight of the spring with so many talented local people proving a stirring show. :

“It is high time to clean up the city. The alleys all over the Lawrence area are in bad condition from the winter accumulation of filth and garbage that has been dumped carelessly all winter, causing health problems. The city has a sanitary officer to look after people who do not obey the laws and we can only hope that person is alert and demanding for a good spring cleanup.”
