A local consultant said he was encouraged by talks with J.C. Penney people about expanding Penney’s local retailing store and said there seemed to be a good chance Penney could be a major player in any retail renovation here.

More than 50 applicants were seeking the executive vice presidency of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce. The post had been vacated when Glenn West left for a Georgia job of the same nature. Screening was under way, according to Lynn Anderson, chamber president, and a decision was expected “in the near future.”

All five city commissioners said they supported some form of city subsidies for public transportation, which had been identified by the sponsors of a campaign forum as the most serious problem facing the city’s elderly and handicapped – getting to and from jobs and shopping.
