Baldwin picked up an impressive victory last week by upending previously unbeaten Louisburg, and is just a Week 2 shootout loss to Paola away from having its own zero in the loss column. Meanwhile, after opening with two consecutive wins, Ottawa has fallen on hard times, including last week’s loss to a Prairie View squad that had yet to win in 2005.

Anderson County (1-3) at De Soto (3-1)

Last week’s results: Anderson County lost to Eudora, 26-20; De Soto lost to Wellsville, 14-7

Quick hits: Despite a penchant for the big play, De Soto coach Brad Scott expressed concerns about offensive consistency early in the 2005 season. Those fears finally caught up with the Wildcats in last week’s loss to Wellsville. De Soto will look to regroup against an Anderson County squad that’s also facing a key mental test this week after watching a possible victory slip away when Eudora scored in the final minute last Friday to remain unbeaten.

McLouth (4-0) at Valley Falls (2-2)

Last week’s results: McLouth beat Jefferson County North, 40-7; Valley Falls lost to Pleasant Ridge, 56-6

Quick hits: Another week, another step in coach Harry Hester’s impressive rebuilding effort at McLouth. The Bulldogs matched last year’s win total with their Week 4 victory over Jefferson County North, and have outscored their four opponents 171-20. Next up is a Valley Falls squad licking its wound after a 50-point loss last Friday, an indication that another big outing may be in line for McLouth’s high-powered one-back offense.

Mill Valley (2-2) at Bonner Springs (1-3)

Last week’s results: Mill Valley lost to Tonganoxie, 39-0; Bonner Springs lost to Lansing, 20-8

Quick hits: Along with Ottawa, Mill Valley is proving to be the area’s most enigmatic team heading into the midpoint of the 2005 season. After impressive back-to-back victories against Lansing and Basehor-Linwood, the Jaguars took a huge step backward in last week’s loss to Tonganoxie – reminiscent of a 20-point setback to Kansas City Turner in the season opener. Mill Valley must get untracked offensively against a Bonner Springs squad that’s proven to be vulnerable to the big play this season.

Doniphan West (3-1) at Oskaloosa (1-3)

Last week’s results: Doniphan West beat Wathena, 42-6; Oskaloosa lost to Jackson Heights, 20-7

Last year’s meeting: Doniphan West won, 59-22

Quick hits: The signs of progress are evident at Oskaloosa, where, after last season’s troubles, the Bears are remaining competitive for four quarters in Delaware Valley League play this season. Oskaloosa will try break out of a logjam at 1-3 on the league leaderboard against a Doniphan West squad whose lone loss came at the hands of fellow area team McLouth in Week 3.

Kansas City Ward (2-2) at Perry-Lecompton (4-0)

Last week’s results: Ward beat Pembroke Hill, 29-0; Perry-Lecompton beat Santa Fe Trail, 28-27

Quick hits: After four straight weeks on the road, Perry-Lecompton is eager to unveil a squad responsible for the school’s best start in almost two decades to its home fans. The Kaws survived their first stiff test of the season last week at Santa Fe Trail, rallying with two late scores to secure the victory. Look for Perry-Lecompton to put a renewed emphasis on defense, where, despite last week’s shootout, the Kaws are still surrendering less than nine points per game.

Santa Fe Trail (1-3) at Tonganoxie (3-1)

Last week’s results: Santa Fe Trail lost to Perry-Lecompton, 28-27; Tonganoxie beat Mill Valley, 39-0

Quick hits: These two teams enter tonight’s end on opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. Santa Fe Trail seemed to have last week’s game against Perry-Lecompton under control, only to surrender two late scores in a heartbreaking loss. Meanwhile, Tonganoxie has rebounded from a sluggish start to its 2005 campaign and has rediscovered its high-octane ground game in back-to-back convincing victories.

Prairie View (1-3) at Wellsville (2-2)

Quick hits: Wellsville figures to come into tonight’s contest riding high after knocking off heavily favored and previously unbeaten De Soto in Week 4. Prairie View also will be riding a new wave of confidence after breaking through for its first victory of the season last week against Ottawa.
