A family displaced by Hurricane Katrina and "adopted" by Lawrence has decided not to move here.

Organizers of the Lawrence hurricane relief program announced Thursday they had received word from the Ursula and D.J. Markey family that they had decided to stay in the Gulf of Mexico region to continue helping clients of their nonprofit center, which serves parents and children affected by disabilities.

The nearly $16,000 donated to the adopt-a-family effort will now be used to provide assistance for a number of families in the area that have been affected by the hurricane. The Douglas County Chapter of the Red Cross has been contacted by about two dozen people who are staying with friends and family in the Lawrence area. None of the donated money will be used for projects not linked to hurricane relief, officials pledged.

"It appears that the Red Cross and the Ballard Community Center have been able to meet the immediate needs of those families, but we suspect that there may be some longer-term needs develop," said Marilyn Hull, program officer for the Douglas County Community Foundation, which oversees the donations.

Hull said the organizers decided against trying to find another specific family to adopt. Mayor Boog Highberger, who helped organize the effort, said that though the program didn't go exactly as planned, he was pleased with the results.

"I find it inspiring that the community was able to assemble such an incredible support system for displaced families," Highberger said. "The recovery process will certainly take many months, and we will see families come to the Lawrence community needing support."

The Markeys have been staying in Canton, Miss., while awaiting their return to the New Orleans area.
