Not-guilty plea entered in Moon Bar incident

An Olathe man charged with punching former Kansas University basketball player J.R. Giddens at a local bar before allegedly being attacked by Giddens and a group of men outside the bar made his first appearance Wednesday in Douglas County District Court.

Jeremiah Creswell, 24, appeared late for court and without an attorney. A judge entered a formal not-guilty plea for him to one count of misdemeanor battery and scheduled his next court date for Oct. 4. The judge also ordered him to go through the booking process at the Douglas County Jail within 48 hours.

Creswell is charged with punching Giddens on May 19 inside the now-closed Moon Bar, 821 Iowa. Witnesses said that moments later outside the bar, Giddens and a group of men attacked Creswell, who took out a knife and slashed Giddens and four other people.

Creswell was charged with punching Giddens inside the bar, but prosecutors said it appeared he inflicted the knife injuries in self-defense.
