Cooler, even possibly wet conditions — that’s what’s in store for the first day of fall in Lawrence, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“Tonight, you might need a jacket or an umbrella,” Schack said.

At 7:45 a.m., the temperature was 69 degrees, the humidity was 84 percent and winds were calm. Skies were mostly sunny, with some mid and high clouds.

“We’re only heading up around 81 to 84 degrees this afternoon,” Schack said.

Autumn officially arrives at 5:23 p.m. today. And by that time, a cold front that’s pushing its way across Nebraska should arrive here, bringing an increase in clouds. There’s a chance for thunderstorms to erupt ahead of the front, with showers following behind it throughout the evening, Schack said.

“We might pick up a very isolated thunderstorm this afternoon. But I don’t think rain showers will arrive until tonight,” Schack said. The National Weather Service says there’s a 20 chance for showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m. and a 50 percent chance tonight.

Schack said temperatures will fall tonight to a low of 59 degrees by early Friday morning.

“We should see the rain showers last through the morning hours,” she said.

Friday’s high will be 71 degrees, with northeast winds 8 to 15 mph.

On Saturday, the morning low temperature will be 62 degrees, with the high reaching 81, under mostly cloudy skies.

Schack said there’s another chance for thunderstorms on Sunday night.
