A who’s who of college and professional basketball coaches gathered Sunday to discuss X’s and O’s at John Calipari’s fifth-annual coaching retreat at the University of Memphis.

Kansas University coach Bill Self joined ex-Jayhawk head coach Larry Brown of the New York Knicks, plus college coaches Tom Crean (Marquette), Quin Snyder (Missouri), Larry Eustachy (Southern Mississippi), Sean Miller (Xavier) and others.

NBA coaches on hand included Mike Fratello (Memphis), Mike Woodson (Atlanta) and Del Harris (Dallas aide), plus former Milwaukee head coach Terry Porter and John Lucas, former coach at San Antonio, Cleveland and Philadelphia.

“It was kind of like a clinic. It was excellent for me to get there and start talking basketball with a lot of college guys and pro guys,” Self said Monday from the recruiting trail.

He spent quality time with Brown, his former boss at KU.

“He showed a play they ran to win a game in the last second with Danny (Manning),” Self said. “We talked about multiple things. He always asks about how everybody is doing here (at KU). He loved coaching here.”

¢ Recruiting: Self on Monday was in Oregon to watch a workout of Kevin Love, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound junior high school forward from Lake Oswego. Rivals.com indicates the No. 6-ranked player in the Class of 2007 is considering KU, Arizona, Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky, Oregon, UCLA, Southern California, Ohio State and others.

¢ Padgett breaks foot: Louisville sophomore forward David Padgett will be sidelined six to eight weeks after breaking a bone in his right foot and spraining his ankle in a pickup game Monday. The 6-11 Padgett fractured the fifth metatarsal and is doubtful to be available when the Cardinals begin the 2005-06 season.

Padgett, who sat out last season after transferring from Kansas University, was expected t o fill the front-line void left by the graduation of Ellis Myles, the team’s leading rebounder last season.

Padgett started 19 games as a freshman at Kansas in 2003-04, averaging 6.5 points and 4.5 rebounds.
