Coach Snyder: 'There will be some consequences' for arrested junior running back Clayton

? Kansas State coach Bill Snyder would not say Monday whether he would bench Thomas Clayton after the junior running back’s arrest on a charge of aggravated battery.

“There will be some consequences for Thomas,” Snyder said during the Big 12 Conference coaches’ weekly conference call. “We have to let things settle down a little bit. It’s not what it appears to be. And I’m not in position to tell you, to elaborate on that.”

Clayton was arrested Friday, after a university parking services employee said Clayton nearly ran over him while trying to avoid having his vehicle immobilized for multiple unpaid parking tickets.

Clayton was arrested and posted bond on a probable-cause statement of aggravated battery but was unlikely to face that charge, Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson said.

While Wilkerson said he had not reviewed the official police report, he said he would not prosecute someone for aggravated battery if no weapons were used or if a suspect did not use his hands or feet to cause severe injuries.

“There has to be some sort of physical contact for it to be aggravated battery,” Wilkerson said.

Clayton, who leads the nation with an average of 164.5 yards rushing, was released on $1,000 bond. No court date has yet been set.

“I don’t think it’s quite the issue that it was made out to be initially,” Snyder said during the conference call. “However, Thomas did make an error in judgment and will suffer some consequences because of it.

“But he’s not a bad person. He’s a good young guy,” the coach said. “He didn’t intentionally do anything – other than make a tremendous error in judgment.”

Sooner QB moves to WR

Norman, Okla. – Tired of waiting for a second chance as Oklahoma’s quarterback, Paul Thompson is moving to wide receiver. The fourth-year junior who beat out Rhett Bomar to become Oklahoma’s starter at the beginning of the season hasn’t seen any playing time since Bomar became the starter two weeks ago. “I didn’t want to sit around anymore,” Thompson said after practice Monday night. “I don’t want to just be sitting around. I’d like to be on the field somehow.”

Michigan safety out for year

Ann Arbor, Mich. – Michigan safety Ryan Mundy is expected to miss the rest of the season because of a nerve injury. “I do not expect Ryan to take part in any game competition this fall,” coach Lloyd Carr said Monday at his weekly news conference. “We’re disappointed that his injury is not responding as we had hoped, and he has decided to rest it and see what happens in spring practice.” Carr would only call the problem a “nerve injury.”

Florida DE has surgery

Gainesville, Fla. – Florida defensive end Ray McDonald had surgery to repair ligament and cartilage tears in his right knee Monday, and the team hopes to have its best pass rusher back at practice within six weeks. McDonald suffered the injuries – a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament and a torn meniscus – Saturday in No. 5 Florida’s 16-7 victory over Tennessee. The Gators originally feared that McDonald would be lost for the remainder of the season.
