Charges filed against shooting suspect

Prosecutors filed charges Monday against a Lawrence man accused of shooting a woman in the face during the weekend.

Domonic A. Shepherd, 25, appeared in District Court by videoconference from the Douglas County Jail and was charged with one count of attempted second-degree murder. Shepherd told a judge he had no history of violence. He said facts presented in court would show the incident was “a big mistake.”

Assistant Dist. Atty. Brenda Clary asked for Shepherd’s bond to be set at $250,000, citing concerns for the safety of witnesses. But Judge Pro Temp Peggy Kittel set bond at $100,000.

The shooting happened about 6:30 a.m. Sunday at an apartment in the 700 block of Comet Lane in northwest Lawrence. Clary said the victim – a 23-year-old woman whom police said Shepherd had met at a nightclub hours earlier – was in stable condition but had bullet fragments near a major artery that had to be removed.

Shepherd’s next court appearance will be Wednesday afternoon.
