Markets rise Friday, but dip for week

Stocks closed sharply higher Friday after a session dominated by the expiration of September futures and options contracts, during which the Dow Jones Industrial Average received a lift from broker upgrades of Intel Corp. and Exxon Mobil Corp.

The Dow industrials closed up 83.19 points, or almost 0.8 percent, at 10,641.94, with 23 of its 30 components in positive territory.

The S&P 500 Index ended 10.18 points higher at 1,237.91 and the Nasdaq Composite Index up 14.2 points at 2,160.35.

But Friday’s boosts couldn’t lift markets for the week. During the past five trading sessions, the Dow lost 0.4 percent, the S&P 500 fell 0.3 percent and the Nasdaq shed 0.7 percent of its value.
