Chancellor given 3 percent raise

Topeka — Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway's annual pay was increased by 3 percent to $307,000.
The Board of Regents on Thursday approved salary increases for the state's university leaders and regents board president Reggie Robinson.
Hemenway, the highest paid of the top officials, receives $240,884 from state coffers with the balance coming from private funds. State contributions to his salary increased from $231,619 last year.
The chancellor said it was a pleasure to hold the post and work with the Board of Regents, but he declined to elaborate about pay.
"I never talk about my salary," he said.
The Board of Regents limits how much institution leaders can earn in salary and private endowment support. Hemenway earns the maximum allowed.
In calculating pay, the Regents reviewed salaries at peer institutions, past increases, and pay increases given to faculty and staff at each institution.
Regent Dick Bond said the chief executive officer increases "for the most part mirrored what was given to faculty at these institutions."
At KU, the pool of funds for merit increases was boosted by 4.5 percent for unclassified staff and 5.5 percent for faculty. There were no flat across-the-board increases for individuals covered by the pool. The total percent increase for classified staff was about 4.5 percent.

Bond said the state was getting a bargain from its university leaders.
"The shock is going to come down the road as these CEOs who have long tenure begin to retire," he said. "The dollars we're paying now will have to be greatly increased to find replacements."
The Board of Regents released information about the state-supported portion of salaries for all university leaders. They were: Kansas State University President Jon Wefald, $230,345; Wichita State University President Don Beggs, $201,618; Fort Hays State University President Edward Hammond, $175,000; Emporia State University President Kay Schallenkamp, $166,000; Pittsburg State University President Tom Bryant, $164,000.
Robinson earns $151,000.
Hemenway also participates in the Regents retirement program, which requires he contribute 5.5 percent of his annual salary. That is matched with 8.5 percent up to IRS limits.
His house on Lilac Lane is provided by the university. His 2005 Chrysler 300 Limited is also provided for business use. And he has a country club membership for university business.
He doesn't receive any performance bonuses. Information about Hemenway's expense account was unavailable Thursday.

A lot of money for someone who doesn't have to pay for his house,car,I'm sure there a food and grocery perks,gets all of his maintainance amd landscaping free,no one on campus can put up a tree for Christmas but there are a mess of employeees up there putting up lights and decorating the “trees” and the house for Christmas,and some decorating goes on for halloween and Thanksgiving…..all done by state workers…..I'm soory I mean university support staff……a lot of work being done and not any out of pocket expense,oh what a life……….a oh yeah the biggest gripe the “grunts” on campus have…..tell him good morning or whatnot and he will not acknowledge them back with a reply or nod,.How important does that make them feel…..especially when they do all the work for him??!!!

Actually, the “classified” employees at KU are no longer part of the state classified system. They are now University Support Staff.

Hmmm? Does someone who actually makes that kind of money NEED a cost of living raise? Seems like with a car and home provided, healthcare, there are no cost of living to raise. Boy, when will we ever stop being addicted to our standard of living and the need to see it raise year, after year.

The state dropped tuition-offset funds by about 30% over
the last five years, screwing over the students. Yet the
Chancellor receives more money?
The jet was mentioned…I am very familiar with that
aircraft. It is a 1997 Cessna Citation Bravo, cost: about
$8 million. Last time I was onboard it was configured to
seat five. Seems irksome, considering Jet-A is $4.40/gal.
But on the flip side, the university gets a lot of use out
of that aircraft, and not just for the chancellor.
Also, the chancellor gets digital cable with every channel
under the sun at home. That is a lot of tv to watch, but
hey, when you have a university to oversee, sometimes you
just have to kick back, watch MTV Cribs, and wonder why
your house isn't on there.

Our CEO keeps saying the goal is to lead KU to a top 25 public institution. But the reality is the ranking declines almost every year since he took the post. Should we give him -3% of raise instead?

Anyone ever heard this guy speak out for an equitable pay raise, similar to his own, along with his perquiste package, for something similar for something similar for those people who empty the trash in the residence he is paid to occupy or maintain the lawn he sits upon?
Anyone note that his darling daughter is having her banal “blog” posted on the journal world web site while people are being killed in Iraq and drowned in New Orleans as she effuses about primates jumping around her camera?
Right. We're all in Kansas where nothing don't count but them that has gets.
