NCAA promotes hurricane-relief efforts

Organization suggests kickoff scrimmages - like KU's 'Late Night' - be used as fund-raisers

The NCAA has suggested to its member schools ways to use men’s basketball to raise money for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

On its Web site, the organization “suggests the use of kickoff scrimmages and the existing two-game basketball exhibition game structure to support hurricane relief.

“Traditionally, kickoff scrimmages have been used as a source of funds for charitable purposes.

“We also ask that schools consider asking for voluntary contributions at the two exhibition basketball games and exhibition games in other sports during the fall.”

The NCAA rejected suggestions by the National Association of Basketball Coaches’ Board of Directors, of which Kansas University’s Bill Self is a member, asking for a third exhibition game to be used for hurricane relief.

As to possibly charging admission at Late Night in the Phog on Oct. 14, KU associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said: “I can see a scenario where that could happen. We need to talk about it here. We haven’t had a chance to talk about it yet.”

KU’s athletic department has committed $10,000 to hurricane relief. In addition, athletes have been asking fans for donations at home football games.
