San Diego ? All-Big 12 Conference defender Holly Gault scored two goals, but No. 15-ranked Pepperdine edged Kansas, 3-2, in college soccer Sunday at the San Diego U. field.

Pepperdine boosted its record to 5-0-0 while Kansas slipped to 3-2-1.

“It was a very good game with even shots and even corners,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “We were a little fatigued, but the girls played very well. I was very proud of them. They dug deep even though they were tired.”

Kansas had edged San Diego U., 1-0, on Friday night.

Gault’s first goal was a header off a corner kick by Jessica Bush in the 25th minute.

Pepperdine knotted the score 10 minutes later when Emily Wynne blasted a shot from 20 yards past goalkeeper Colleen Quinn who had recorded three straight shutouts.

Pepperdine’s Kelsey Quane notched an unassisted goal in the 65th minute to give the Waves a 2-1 lead. Quane’s shot from 28 yards went over Quinn’s head.

Gault responded with her second goal. The junior from Spring Hill took a pass from Caroline Smith and found open space to fire a shot that hit a Pepperdine defender before landing in the back of the net.

But Pepperdine posted the game-winner with seven minutes remaining. The Waves’ Megan Woods sprinted up field, and when KU freshman goalkeeper Julie Handley, who had replaced Quinn in net, came out to meet her, Woods scooted past Handley and kicked the ball into the open net.

Each team took 13 shots. Quinn was credited with four saves.

Kansas will entertain Cal-Irvine at 5 p.m. Friday.
