‘Super Hooper’ plays ’em all for Hens

Kevin Hooper put in a full day’s work on Labor Day.

The 28-year-old Lawrence High graduate played all nine positions – a position an inning – for the Toledo Mud Hens in a 4-3 Triple-A baseball victory over Indianapolis before 8,592 fans at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio.

“It was a blast, something I’ll never forget. It’s not every day you get to play all nine,” Hooper said in a phone conversation Monday night.

“Every inning they put on the scoreboard, ‘Where’s Super Hooper Now?’ and checked off each position as we went along.”

Hooper – the former Wichita State second baseman – approached skipper Larry Parrish with the idea weeks ago, indicating he’d love to play a position per inning if the Hens had clinched a spot in the playoffs. He opened the game at catcher, donning the gear for the first time since : when?

“I played it one time, back in Lawrence in DCABA ball,” Hooper said. “It was the toughest, and we got it out of the way first.”

In successive innings, he moved to first base, second, third, shortstop, left field, center field, right field and pitcher.

As “closer,” Hooper came out of the Hen bullpen and retired Bobby Hill on a groundout to first.

The Toledo Mud Hens tracked Kevin Hooper's quest to play all nine positions with this scoreboard graphic.

He struck out Jorge Valendia swinging on four pitches, and Paul Chiaffredo grounded out to end the game.

“We took the lead in the eighth, and I was looking to see if anybody was warming up,” Hooper said. “Nobody was, so I got the opportunity to try to close it out.”

It was Hooper’s first pitching performance since last year when he worked a meaningless inning after his Columbus team had run out of bodies in a rout.

“I just told myself to keep the ball down,” said Hooper, who prior to last season last pitched the summer after his senior year.

Hooper did it all Sunday, even running a TV camera in the dugout in the home half of the fifth.

“I talk to the camera guys quite a bit every day,” Hooper said. “One of ’em said, ‘Hoop, they want to know if you’ll film a half inning.’ I said, ‘You’ll have to run that one by Skip.’ He (Parrish) said it was fine.”

Hooper went 0-for-3 with a walk as the leadoff batter and in the field had three putouts (including a sliding catch in left) and one assist. He kept the baseball after the final out was recorded and was presented the lineup card as a souvenir.

“It was a great day for everybody,” he said.

Indianapolis catcher Eddie Olszta lso made a run at playing all nine positions, failing only to play his natural position. His pitching outing wasn’t as successful as Hooper’s. He took the loss by yielding two runs in his one inning of work. He also went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

Toledo, which already had clinched the International League’s West Division championship, will advance to the playoffs, as will wild card Indianapolis. Toledo, Detroit’s AAA affiliate, will meet Norfolk, Va., on Wednesday.
