Chris Rock hits funny bone as narrator of new TV comedy

We spoke to actor and comedian Chris Rock in Manhattan recently. He was part of TV’s “Saturday Night Live” cast from 1989 to 1991. He has more than 20 movie credits, including “The Longest Yard” remake and doing the voice of Marty the zebra in “Madagascar.” He’s the narrator of the TV show coming this fall called “Everybody Hates Chris,” based on his childhood.

Q: Many people think you are the funniest comedian around right now. What do you think of that?

A: What do they know? Any compliment is good. I am not the funniest person. Jim Carrey has the receipts that say he is a lot funnier than me. Eddie Murphy and Robin Williams are pretty funny. I am not going to say I am the funniest.

Q: Did you ever think you would become such a famous celebrity?

A: I never thought about being a celebrity, I only thought about being a comedian. Celebrity is what (the fans) make me. I am a comedian.

Q: Your younger brother, Tony, looks and acts a lot like you. Was there ever competition between you while growing up?

A: When we were younger, Tony was better than me at everything. He was a great athlete, and he always got the girls. I am sure one day he may be a better comedian than me. He was better than me at everything.

Q: How do you get rid of stage fright?

A: I never had stage fright. I mean, there is a little nervousness. It is kind of like a calling because I don’t have any other type of talent. It is the only thing I do well; nothing else has worked out for me.

Q: Do you have advice for kids who want to be comedians?

A: Move to New York or L.A. You have to study the craft and the comedians who were here before. Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Sam Kinison, Robert Klein, Billy Crystal. … Study them and then your own voice will come out.

Q: Do you regret anything you’ve done?

A: Yeah, lots of things, but I can’t talk about it to kids. But professionally? Probably not. Everything you do helps you become the person that you are.
