Lawrence’s Labor Day closings announced

Government offices and public services in Lawrence and area towns will be closed today in observance of Labor Day.

All city, county and state offices will be closed, as will federal offices in the general services administration and the federal courts.

Most banks will also be closed.

Most Lawrence liquor stores said they would operate with regular hours.

No buses in the Lawrence Transit system will run today. Transit service will resume Tuesday.

Downtown Lawrence parking meters will be free.

City residents are asked to set out yard waste with their usual weekly trash as city crews will not pick it up today. Commercial collections will be conducted as scheduled today.

No adult sports programs, recreational classes or special events are scheduled for the Labor Day weekend. Sports leagues will not play today.

All recreation centers will also be closed today.

Eagle Bend Golf Course will accept tee times from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

The Outdoor Aquatic Center, 727 Ky., will be open from 1 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., which is its final day of operation for the year.

The Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Drive, will be open all day today for lap swimming and from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for recreation.

Douglas County Senior Services will be closed. All activities, including the Adult Day Program and the noon meal, will be canceled today at the Lawrence Senior Center. Meals will not be served at the following meal sites: Babcock Place, Edgewood Place, Lecompton, Eudora and Baldwin. Meals will not be delivered to homes, and Bus 62 services will be canceled.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed today.

Kansas University classes will not be in session today. All campus offices will be closed. Most campus libraries will be open from 1 p.m. to midnight today.

The post office will not make regular deliveries today. Express Mail deliveries will be made. Mail pickup from collection boxes will not be made as posted on individual boxes.

All UPS operations will be closed today.

The Journal-World circulation office will be open for phone and walk-in business from 4:30 a.m. to 10 a.m.

USA Today will not be delivered.
