Tickets available for NAACP banquet

Tickets can now be ordered for this year’s Freedom Fund Banquet and awards ceremony to be held by the Lawrence chapter of the NAACP.

The banquet will be Oct. 22 in the Kansas Union Ballroom. Proceeds for the annual banquet go to support a scholarship fund for college-bound high school seniors.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Rod Bremby, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Also appearing will be Dylan Theno, who was successful in a lawsuit against the Tonganoxie school district over sexual harassment by other students, and his attorney, Arthur Benson, who also was instrumental in the desegregation of Kansas public schools.

Others who will appear are KMBC channel 9 meteorologist Bryan Busby; Moussa Elbayoumy, director of the Lawrence Islamic Center; Mayor Boog Highberger; and Charles Jean Baptiste, Kansas state NAACP president.

Tickets are $30 per person and can be ordered by calling Cynthia Colbert at 832-3310 or Sonya Johnson at 979-4592.
