Googling common before first dates

People will Google all sorts of things, using the online search engine to find the latest on everything from a favorite actor to an old flame.

Now comes word from the online dating service It’s Just Lunch that many singles Google someone before a first date.

A survey of 1,167 singles showed that 43 percent did a Google search on a new date. But the high-tech tendencies seem to fall away as things progress. The survey found that 80 percent of singles set up a first date by phone, not e-mail. In fact, even after the first date, a phone call was the personal mode of contact preferred over an e-mail.

Other It’s Just Lunch dating do’s and don’ts:

¢ It’s OK to send an e-mail after a first date, but it should be “brief, upbeat and fun.”

¢ It’s OK to use e-mail to hash over plans for a date but always confirm with a phone call.

¢ It’s good manners to get in touch after a first date. If you’d like to see the person again, a phone call and e-mail are fine. If you’d rather not have another date, “a short, nice e-mail is appropriate.”

¢ Never discuss your personal life in an e-mail; they can be forwarded or read by others.
