Jackie Foley, a longtime Lawrence banker, has joined University National Bank, Lawrence, as vice president for mortgage lending.

Foley, who has been in the banking business for more than 15 years, previously studied X-Ray technology at Washburn University and received an Associate of Arts degree in business from Johnson County Community College.

¢ Barbara Braa, a trust officer with CornerBank, attended the annual Kansas Trust Conference Oct. 6-7 in Manhattan. The conference featured sessions on trusts, estate planning, economic trends, ethics, mediation and retirement plan changes. More than 80 trust professionals and affiliates attended the conference. It was sponsored by the Trust Division of the Kansas Bankers Assn.

¢ Diana Deutsch, Lawrence, has joined Capital City Bank as vice president for lending and Lawrence market manager. Her responsibilities include the origination of residential and commercial loans. Deutsch has been in the lending industry since 1990.

¢ Steve Watson recently was promoted to operations supervisor for Aquila Inc.’s natural gas distribution operations in Lawrence. He is responsible for the oversight of customer service as well as heating, ventilation and air conditioning appliance repair programs in Lawrence. Watson joined Aquila in 2000 in Lawrence as a service technician.

Aquila serves 69,000 electric and 100,000 natural gas customer in Kansas, including Lawrence.

¢ Brenda Peterson-Smith, owner of Hair Experts Salon & Spa, recently passed a certification test to become a Redken certified colorist. Peterson-Smith traveled to Dallas to complete the test, which included written, essay and practical components. She is an educator for Redken 5th Avenue NYC and one of the first to complete the certification phase. Color certification will be made available to hairdressers across the country in 2006.

¢ Kansas Technology Enterprise Corp. has promoted Kevin Carr to chief operations officer.

Carr has served in a variety of positions at KTEC during his 18-year tenure, including management of the corporation’s investment portfolio and oversight of a network of technology incubators. Most recently, he served as KTEC’s vice president for university programs.

In his new position, Carr continues to oversee the Centers of Excellence and manage administrative affairs of corporation, fiscal and budget management. He also oversees legislative affairs for KTEC, as well as manages the day-to-day operations.

Carr received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Pittsburg State University and a master’s degree in economic geography from Kansas University.

¢ The Kansas Department of Commerce is accepting applications for a $25,000 scholarship program to help Kansas agritourism operators attend conferences, seminars and educational tours; gain first-hand information regarding practices and techniques used by other agritourism vendors; and develop nationwide relationships within the industry. All applications must be submitted by Oct. 30.

The Department will give two types of scholarships:

¢ Conference Attendance Scholarships will reimburse awardees up to $5,000 per application for all costs related to educational tours, workshops, seminars, registration and one year’s annual organizational dues related to attendance at an approved agritourism, tourism or agricultural direct marketing conference.

¢ Best-Practices Educational Trip Scholarships will reimburse awardees up to $2,000 per application for costs associated with guided, organized trips to agritourism, tourism or value-added businesses regionally or nationally.

All applicant businesses must be registered with the department as a certified agritourism operation. Applications are available online at www.kansasagritourism.org. Awards will be announced by Dec. 1.

¢ Soroptimist International of Lawrence is accepting applications for a $2,000 scholarship to be given in January. The Women’s Opportunity Award is a cash award to assist women in obtaining the skills and education they need to improve their employment status. A woman is eligible to apply for a Women’s Opportunity Award if she:

¢ Has primary responsibility for herself and dependents.

¢ Is enrolled in an undergraduate degree program or a vocational or skills training program.

¢ Has financial need.

Recipients may use the award for any expenses related to their educational pursuits.

¢ Ed Young, Eudora, is the Kansas Department of Transportation’s new director of aviation.

Young previously worked for Sunflower Mediation and Municipal Consulting, where he served for the past year as a consultant, mediator and attorney. He was county administrator and a counselor in Seward County from 2002 to 2004 and also served on the Liberal Airport Advisory Committee.

Young previously spent six years as the city administrator of Eldon, Mo., where he was involved in securing a nearly $2 million Federal Aviation Administration grant for the Eldon Model Airpark.

From 1994 to 1996, Young was city administrator for the city of Tonganoxie and he served as an administrative assistant to the city manager of Shawnee in 1993.

Young earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1990, Master of Public Administration in 1995 and law degree in 1994, all from Kansas University. He has a private pilot’s license that he received in 2003.

¢ The Kansas Motor Carriers Assn. elected Calvin Koehn, president of Circle K Transport Inc. in Copeland, as its president for 2005-2006. He precedes Jeff Robertson, JMJ Projects in Kansas City, Kan., as president. Robertson was then elected as chairman of the board and will serve another year on the executive committee.

KMCA also elected new members to its executive committee and board of directors during the annual meeting Sept. 29-30 in Overland Park. The board is responsible for setting the agenda and policies of the association.

Lynn Taylor, of Hillcrest Wrecker in Lawrence, will serve on the 2006 board of directors for the Towing and Recovery Division.

Nancy Forge, of Studdard Moving & Storage in Leavenworth, will serve on the 2007 board of directors for the Movers Conference of Kansas Division.

¢ Randy Barnes, of Realty Executives Hedges Real Estate in Lawrence, has received the Accredited Buyer Representation designation from the Real Estate Buyer’s Agent Council Inc. of the National Association of Realtors. To receive the designation, Barnes completed a required course in buyer representation, took an elective course focusing on a buyer-representation specialty, and submitted documentation verifying professional experience.

¢ MeLeah Strain is the new chiropractic assistant and office manager of Stuart Chiropractic Health Center in Lawrence. Strain moved from Alabama, where she worked in her family’s chiropractic office.

Dr. Michael Stuart and Strain attended Pinnacle Chiropractic Management Group meetings in Chicago and Tulsa, Okla. More than 2,500 doctors are members of Pinnacle, whose focus is providing member chiropractors with innovative techniques and practices to offer on-time appointments.

¢ Stephen Hill, a Morgan Stanley financial adviser in Lawrence, has joined the company’s Wealth Advisor program, which outlines investment strategies for affluent clients looking to manage, grow, preserve and transition their wealth.

To join the program, participating advisers receive training at Morgan Stanley headquarters in New York.

Hill, a Lawrence native, joined Morgan Stanley in 1976. He is part of The Hill Group, which includes his daughter, Emily Hill, a financial adviser; and Pamela Mayfield, a senior registered client service associate.

Stephen Hill received a bachelor’s degree from Kansas University, a diploma of commerce from the University of Birmingham in England, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard University.

¢ The Kaw Valley Heritage Alliance will be co-host to a water quality discussion and workshop for people who live and farm in the upper Wakarusa watershed, which is above Clinton Lake.

The event will be from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 2 at the Carbondale Veterans of Foreign Wars building, 422 Ridgeway St. in Carbondale.

Before the workshop, there will be a demonstration tour from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at 3431 S.W. 97th St. near Wakarusa. The tour will highlight field buffers and stream bank protection measures.

The goal of the workshop is to increase local awareness of and involvement in watershed restoration and protection. Participants will be invited to influence watershed plan priorities and water quality and conservation efforts in the community.

The workshop will be presented by county conservation districts, Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams, National Resources Conservation Service, K-State Research and Extension and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Lunch and a small breakfast will be provided.
