Man sentenced for sexual assault

A Douglas County judge has ordered a Lawrence man to spend more than five years in prison for sexually assaulting his roommate’s 15-year-old sister.

Family members of Travis Cromwell, 20, sobbed as sheriff’s deputies took him into custody after his sentencing Thursday morning for the incident that occurred May 15.

The victim previously testified that she was spending the night at her brother’s apartment. Cromwell came home in the middle of the night, she said, woke her up and gave her shots of hard liquor.

After she vomited, the victim said Cromwell carried her into his bed and raped her.

Cromwell was originally charged with rape but later pleaded no contest to a charge of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

The victim told Judge Paula Martin she’s had recurring nightmares since being sexually assaulted, and her grades have suffered in school.

She also said the attack on her character during the preliminary hearing by Cromwell’s attorney, John Ambrosio, made testifying twice as difficult.

“Mr. Ambrosio’s brutal attack on my character only doubled my pain,” the victim told the judge.

Judge Martin also sentenced Cromwell for two separate cases of driving under the influence for a second time. He had a prior DUI conviction.

As part of the plea agreement, the sentences for those crimes will run concurrent to the aggravated indecent liberties sentence.

The judge also ordered Cromwell to complete an intensive substance abuse program while in prison.
