Losers go for broke on reality series

For the record, the new weekly series “Man vs. Vegas” (9 p.m., CMT) appears on a country music channel. But it has nothing to do with music and isn’t set in the country.

Host Daren Leverenz is a personable enough guy. Sporting a shaved head and stylish facial hair, he could be a professional wrestler or the star of a beer commercial. But he claims to be a winner of the “American Dream” who had accumulated a fortune before turning 25. Just how, we’re never told. He proceeded to lose $3 million to the Vegas gambling tables in the late 1990s, but he has since scratched together a cool million. His mission is to return to Vegas, win back his $3 million and help as many tourists and gamblers as he can.

This all sounds like a plot for a movie. A very dumb movie. After all, what can we learn from a man who squandered $3 million playing with cards and chips? It’s a little like taking retirement planning advice from somebody who tells you, “I’m here from Enron and I’m here to help.”

Leverenz proceeds to hit every imaginable table, “21,” craps, baccarat and make small talk with people who are just in town to throw their money away. A veritable Pied Piper, he gets them to join in his games and occasionally helps them win money and sometimes helps them lose it at an accelerated rate.

If you’re watching “Vegas” to gain any tips, insights or even learn the rules of these ancient swindles, you’re definitely out of luck. Leverenz seems more interested in making quick friends and imparting his gambling philosophy: “Think positive.”

To be fair, our intrepid host does meet a charming widow who throws gambling slang around with authority and aplomb. She’s a real character. But once you get beyond her brash attitude and flirtatious manner, you realize she’s a bit of a sad character too.

¢ Dewey lights up on “Malcolm in the Middle” (7:30 p.m., Fox). If Dewey’s old enough to smoke, then perhaps this comedy should call it a day before Malcolm suffers a mid-life crisis. It’s been a great run.
