Cool, damp and cloudy today

Grab a jacket and take along an umbrella this morning — temperatures in the 50s, cool winds and possibly even more rain are in Lawrence’s forecast.

“We do have a chance for a spotty shower, especially during the midday,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist. “If you think it feels cool on your way out this morning, it’s going to feel the same on your way home.”

Lawrence picked up some showers Wednesday, with the heaviest rains falling between 10 p.m. and midnight. Rain totals in the area ranged from about half an inch to about 1.5 inches, Schack said.

Lawrence Municipal Airport recorded 1.44 inches of rain. At 7:30 a.m., the temperature at the airport was 54 degrees, the humidity was 94 percent and winds were from the east at 8 mph.

Schack said most of the rain was to the west of Lawrence this morning. That system was moving east and might bring some sprinkles or light showers during the middle of the day, she said. The National Weather Service says there’s a 50 percent chance for showers today.

“There’s a lot of cloud cover out there. I don’t think we see much in the way of sunshine today,” Schack said.

Today’s high will be 55 degrees, with cloudy skies expected through the day and winds from the north at 8 to 15 mph.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to 42 degrees by early Friday morning, with northeast winds 5-10 mph. Friday’s temperatures will head up to a high of 60 degrees, with north winds 5-10 mph.

“A chilly, fall-like weekend is in the forecast,” Schack said.

Saturday morning’s low will be 39 degrees and the high will be 56 degrees, with a slight chance for showers Saturday evening as a front moves in, Schack said.

The National Weather Service says there’s a 30 percent chance for rain on Saturday and a 20 percent chance for rain on Saturday night.
